ANDREAE VESALII: THE BONES AND MUSCLES International Journal of Morphology
Ayres de Vasconcellos,Henrique; Barros de Vasconcellos,Pedro Henrique.
The historical references are taken from Aristoteles (384-322 a C) considered the father of Kinesiology, and Claudius Galenus from Pergamon (131-201), the first team doctor. Both men´s studies shared the same objective: functional-anatomic aspects related to the Locomotive System. Although there were several descriptive anatomic studies of bones and muscles, it was Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564), whom most significantly contributed to the development of a new methodology for the lectures of Anatomy, with the setting up of skeletons and dissection of bodies during his lessons. Objectives: the aim of this paper is study the description of bones and muscles from the Vesalius works. We search Vesalius´s publications, specially "De Humani...

Appendicular fractures of traumatic etiology in dogs: 955 cases (2004-2013) Ciência Rural
Libardoni,Renato do Nascimento; Serafini,Gabriele Maria Callegaro; Oliveira,Carla de; Schimites,Paula Ivanir; Chaves,Rafael Oliveira; Feranti,João Pedro Scussel; Costa,Cesar Augusto Soares; Amaral,Anne Santos do; Raiser,Alceu Gaspar; Soares,André Vasconcelos.
ABSTRACT: Orthopedic diseases are common in dogs and cats, especially, those caused by traumatic injury. Overall, among the significant changes in this group, the fractures are the major cause of pain and dysfunction in dogs of all ages, sizes and breeds. Therefore, a retrospective study of dogs examined between January 2004 and December 2013 at the University Veterinary Hospital of Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, was conducted aiming to identify and determine the prevalence of appendicular fractures caused by trauma and characterizing the population/etiology. In a population of 1,200 dogs with suspected traumatic orthopedic diseases in the locomotor system, 955 (79.6%) had appendicular fractures. Of the dogs 23.5% had fractures on the femur (n=225),...

Diaphyseal Nutrient Foramina in the Femur, Tibia and Fibula Bones International Journal of Morphology
Collipal,Erika; Vargas,Ramiro; Parra,Ximena; Silva,Héctor; del Sol,Mariano.
The nutrient foramina of the femur and fibula are located in the middle third of the diaphysis of these bones, on the other hand in the tibia it's in the proximal third of its diaphysis. With the objective of complementing the information delivered by other authors, we investigated the location, the number of diaphysis foramines, the distance or position of the foramines in relation to the length of the bone and the proximal epiphysis and the diameter of the bone at the height of the foramen. For that purpose, we used 140 dry bones (50 femora, 50 tibiae and 40 fibulae) of adult subjects of both sexes from the Anatomy Museum Faculty of Medicine, Universidad de La Frontera, Temuco, Chile. The nutrient foramen of the femur was located in the linea áspera in...

Didatic approach of ultrasonographic examination for evaluation of the carpal joint in horses Ciência Rural
Hage,Maria Cristina Ferrarini Nunes Soares; Invernizzi,Mariana Sachi; Bellegard,Gabriela Monaldo Corrá; Dória,Renata Gebara Sampaio; Schwarzbach,Silke Verena; Miada,Vanessa Junko Yamaguti.
ABSTRACT: The carpus is a complex articulation, which is often involved in injuries in equine athletes. The objective of this study was to suggest a didactic approach for ultrasonography training for the examination of the carpal joint in horses. Ultrasonograhy examination was performed in a healthy 14-year-old horse. The images were compared with those of a dissected anatomic specimen of the carpal region of a senior horse and with those reported in the literature. Identifiable structures were as follows: (dorsal) tendon of the muscle extensor carpi radialis, tendon of the muscle extensor carpi obliquus, tendon of the muscle commom digital extensor, dorsal synovial outpouchings, joint capsule and fat cushion, (lateral) tendon of the muscle lateral digital...

Observation of Sex Chromatin in Exhumed Bones, Evaluation of their Diagnosis Value International Journal of Morphology
Muñoz,Patricia; Roa,Ignacio; Zavando,Daniela; Suazo Galdames,Iván.
Observation of sexual chromatin has shown to be very helpful in gender forensic diagnosis. In the present study we analyzed the diagnosis performance of the method in, non-treated or treated with conventional bone techniques, exhumed bone pieces. We used long bones of male and female individuals, the method applied is described in Suazo et al. (2010). In the non-treated exhumed pieces, the general accuracy of the method was 75%, while in the treated pieces the method was inapplicable due to the lack of cells in the tissue. Our results suggest that it is possible to determine the sex of aged human bones buried under different conditions through a fast and simple histological method, but the treatment with physical and chemical means eliminates the remaining...

Quality parameters of the tibiae and femora of ostriches Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Almeida Paz,ICL; Mendes,AA; Balog,A; Almeida,ICL; Martins,MRFB; Vulcano,LC; Komiyama,CM.
An experiment was carried out to establish mean bone quality values of the tibiae and femora of ostriches and to evaluate these bones. The right leg bones of 10 males and 10 female African Black ostriches were evaluated. Birds were radiographed immediately after slaughter (during bleeding), with the aid of a portable X-ray apparatus. The obtained radiographs were scanned and bone mineral density means were obtained using software. Bone strength, Seedor index, and dry matter percentage were evaluated and correlated to weight gain during the finishing period (3-13 months of age). Mean values of the evaluated bone quality traits, not previously found in literature, were established. There were no significant differences between males and females in...
